Arcade Fire – Reflektor

Not much time to post so I will be quick.

I’ve never really heard Arcade Fire … well, I must have done inadvertently as they’re one of the biggest bands in the world but I had a bit of a chip on my shoulder. This guy i knew really liked them, he was a nob so I subconsciously rejected them. So why I am writing here about them? Probably because James Murphy produced their latest album and Pitchfork reviewed it at 9.2.

Wow. This is a good record. One miss-step in terms of the track list but apart from that its a a stonking listen. Murphy’s presence is obvious to anyone who’s stalked him as much as we have but … he’s half turned Arcade Fire into Talking Heads. Particularly Remain in Light Talking Heads which of course we’re all familiar with. Afterlife, the track I’ve posted here is very reminiscent in the intro its almost uncanny!

So, I am pretty sure Guy is an AF fan but not sure if Nolan and David shared similar chips on shoulders to me.

Anyway, I love this. I can’t stop listening to it.

What do you think?

PS – I’ve got Spotify Premium so have practically stopped buying CDs, feels weird but am enjoying it. Any opinions on this?

David Bowie & James Murphy – SONG ORGASM

So we just died and went to heaven, right? I mean, I dreamt about LCD doing a remix of a Bowie song, but not in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine it would be this good!

Heard a lovely interview with Murphy where he talked about how much he shit himself about doing a good job. And get this, he didn’t even sample the Ashes to Ashes piano, he worked out how to do it and recorded it himself, clearly along with every other part of the track save the vocal.

Never heard a remix that opens out a song so much before. It’s astonishing. First time I heard it, it took my breath away. NB Listen to the whole thing, it’s worth waiting for!

Arcade Fire – Reflektor

Well, I’ve been waiting for this to a while. And I absolutely love it. I think with James Murphy on board it’ll be really interesting to see what the album’s like. Even though it sounds like Arcade Fire singing an LCD Soundsystem cover, in fact more like half that and half Metronomy, and after a few listens I’ve lost that and just think it’s an absolutely stonking record. It’s good that they are happy to go with James Murphy’s direction and not feel that have to make Suburbs II. Can’t wait to hear the rest of the stuff for the new album. Every one’s been a bit of a change so far, after all.

I didn’t warm to the Suburbs at first, but I actually love it as much as all their other work. It’s got this slight feeling of decay to it, in that it’s actually much more subtle than you think at first, and while it’s a bit long, there are some incredible songs on it. But each album’s been a progression. Funeral sounded like nothing I’d ever heard, then Black Mirror was this bleak treatise on the world, capitalism (but beautifully melodic) and then The Suburbs moved them into middle America, capturing this ennui and post-crash boredom and decay. I can’t wait to hear what the new one is like. They are – like them or not – brilliant musicians, and understand they need to change, and this is mouthwatering. I’m sure they won’t just make a bunch of disco-fied Arcade Fire tracks, I’m sure there’s a few tricks up their sleeve.
