Public Enemy

This is what I’ve wanted. This is literally what I’ve been waiting for. Public Enemy, re-signed to Def Jam and angry. I grew up on Public Enemy, from age 11 they’ve been part of my life, particularly the first decade of their output (I kind of got lost after that). My lens on American politics was massively influenced by Chuck D. Therefore, I’ve been crying out for his thoughts for at least the last 4 years … and here we have them;

Go, go, go, just go
Go, go, go (we have)

Whatever it takes, rid this dictator
POTUS my tail, Ass debater
Prime-time Preemo, rhyme-time crime
Like no other in this lifetime
White house killer, dead in lifelines
Vote this joke out, or die tryin’
Unprecedented, demented, many president’d
Nazi Gestapo dictator defended
It’s not what you think, it’s what you follow
Run for them jewels, drink from that bottle
Another four years gonna gut y’all hollow
Gutted out, dried up, broke and can’t borrow

State of the Union, shut the fuck up
Sorry ass motherfucker
Stay away from me

Stay away from meMister, I am the law and you are not
In fact, I’m god, I got a lot
Mister these united breaks takeover come over
Orange hair, fear the comb-over
Here’s another scare, keep them hands in the air
Better not breathe, you dare not dare
Don’t say nothing, don’t think nothing
Make America great again the middle just love it
When he wanna talk, walk y’all straight to them ovens
Human beings of color, yeah we be sufferin’ (come on)

State of the Union, shut the fuck up
Sorry ass motherfucker
Stay away from me

Go, go, go, go, go
Go, go, go, go, go

Better rock that vote or vote for hell
Real generals now, not some USFL
Not a fuckin’ game, I dare not mention his name
Operation 45, yeah it’s the same thing
Sounds like Berlin burnin’, same thing
History’s a mystery if y’all ain’t learning
End this clown show, for real a state bozo
Nazi cult 45 Gestapo

State of the Union, shut the fuck up
Sorry ass motherfucker
Stay away from me

Introducing … Coco

How beautiful is this? I’ve been looking for some guitar driven music to love and coming up short. This is right up my street and I love it. Coco are … well, nobody know’s too much really. Their ‘about’ section on Spotify doesn’t give much away either. Have a spin through the 3 tracks and let us know what you think.

Sufjan Stevens – Video Game

It’s difficult to know what I really expected the next Sufjan Stevens song to sound like following the epic 12 minute+ ‘America’. The track list for the new album dropping at the end of Sept. was shared recently showing that ‘America’ will close the 15 track album out.

This track ‘Video Game’ will feature as third track on the album. And it couldn’t much further from America. The video features Tik Tok sensation Jalaiah Harmon performing her viral ‘renegade’ dance … which doesn’t really fit but of course in context does. How did that conversation go ‘Hey Jalaiah, do you want to star in a music video for a song about not wanting to star in music videos?’

For the avoidance of doubt … I love this.

Romare – ‘Gone’

I love ‘happy 6 music’ accidents. On Saturday I was driving with child 2 (only 5 years old but preternaturally ‘musical’, he can sniff a groove out like truffle pig). We had 6 Music on, Jamz Supernova (whttps://twitter.com/jamzsupernova?lang=en) was in for Mr. Peterson and after a short introduction from Romare, she dropped the opening track of his new album, Gone … and the car went wild! Sammy loved it. Every beat of the 8 minutes. It’s a belting track that I love. The album is strong and tight too. Possible choice for Album of the Month in Sept. as it’s my choice.

Clams Casino – Instrumental Relics

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LxQK07o8t2g

I’m not sure if you’ve all come across the name Clams Casino before? He’s a hip-hop producer that while not single-handedly, was massively responsible for huge shifts in the direction of the genre. He produced beats for Lil B, ASAP Rocky and Soulja Boy, yep, a bunch of artists I know next to nothing about or if I am honest care for that much. I remember at the start of this blog a mini-album he released was nearly an AOTM choice form me … I can’t recall why I didn’t choose it.

I’d be lying if I said I’d followed his career closely but he’s continued to produce high quality instrumental hip hop since. And has now gone back to early recordings and mixtape tracks to curate an album of ‘instrumental relics’ including instrumental versions of some of his better known productions for Lil B and Asap Rocky.

The album, given this genesis, is surprisingly coherent. It hangs together beautifully. It’s great for working too. But more than anything for me, it shows how much better his music is than 99.9% of the musical-prozac-blah of the 8hr long spotify instrumental playlists designed for ‘focus’ or ‘study-beat’s etc. This is the sound of an artist blowing most of his peers out of the water.

Here’s a little glimpse into how his music sounds standalone vs. with Lil B …
